ONTARIO'S #1 WINERY STARTS 36TH WINE-GRAPE HARVEST
Plenty of heat and well-timed rain yields fantastic potential for Henry of Pelham's 2024 vintage.
Early in the morning on August 29th on Niagara's Short Hills Bench, the first ripe grapes of the 2024 harvest were hand-picked at Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery. Recently awarded the title of #1 Winery in Ontario by Wine Align at the National Wine Awards, picking for the award-winning winery's 36th vintage began 9 days earlier than the 2023 harvest.
"We are very excited to start harvesting our Pinot Noir grapes today," said Matthew Speck, Senior Vice President of Operations, Henry of Pelham. "Record heat units and plenty of sun with intermittent rain has lead to an earlier start than usual and the potential is just mind-blowing. We had some heavy rainfall events early in the season but they were prior to fruit development and won't have a detrimental effect on quality. From a sustainability standpoint, we're seeing very lush growth in our row-center cover crops which is part of our no-till regenerative approach to soil health and agriculture."
This year's harvest began as usual with hand-picking Pinot Noir followed by Chardonnay for our award-winning Cuvée Catharine traditional method sparkling wines and NEW Henry of Pelham Charmat method sparkling wine. This will be followed by our iconic Baco Noir next week.
“We had an earlier start to the 2024 season which lead to an earlier harvest," said Lawrence Buhler, Head Winemaker, Henry of Pelham. "With plenty of heat and well-timed rain, we have a well-balanced crop with smaller clusters overall. You can expect an abundance of flavour and strong varietal character in all our 2024 wines." Wines from Henry of Pelham's 2024 vintage will be available in market starting in early 2025 led by Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. Shop our current vintage here. |
