ST. CATHARINES, ON
Hand picking of Pinot Noir grapes began this morning to mark the of ficial beginning of harvest at the vineyards of Henry of Pelham Family Estate winery. This years’ start is about normal due to the fantastic conditions of the summer. Another mild winter allowed the vines to mature and produce a large and very high quality crop. “We went from winter to summer this year completely missing spring. A slow start in spring was due to the cold and rainy weather but was jump started by an absolutely amazing July and August” said Paul Speck, President of Henry of Pelham. These specific grapes will be used in Cuvée Catharine which is a sparkling wine made in the traditional method.
“We have had a very hot summer which made the grapes very sweet. Flavours are advanced” said Matthew Speck, Viticulturalist at Henry of Pelham. “Harvest will continue through to the end of October when we finish harvesting most of our reds” said Matthew.
“This looks like a great year which is very exciting since it follows a fantastic 2010 considered by most to be one of the best ever” said Paul. The entire wine grape crop has been estimated at 60,000 tonnes which puts it around a full crop. The wines from 2011 will begin to appear in the market in the spring of 2012.
Henry of Pelham is a family owned and operated winery which has won numerous International and Domestic awards for its wines and the wines are available across Canada and throughout the world.
